Why it’s Important to Remember that Colleges are Businesses

If you had any question about how frequently colleges discount their tuition, there is a recent New York Times article that shows the practice is growing with certain colleges: When Colleges Dangle Money to Lure Students Who Ignored Them.

The reality is that colleges are run like businesses. They are trying to maximize revenue. So, they are ready to offer discounts to keep their classes full and attract the right types of students to their school – the ones that make their school look more appealing to other students.

The Call for Clear Thinking

Smart parents and students need to approach college with their eyes open. It should be a smart financial decision and not just an emotional one. While we parents want to give our children the best that we can, it should not cause us to sink into debt or put our retirements on hold.
